Barcelona are closing in on a new contract for midfield star Gavi, with a deal expected to be made official soon.

Having broken into the first team in spectacular fashion this season, Gavi has already won international recognition and is regarded as one of the brightest talents in world football.

His rapid rise, however, had caused Barcelona a major headache as the player only had a minimum fee release clause of €50 million in his deal, which was threatened to be triggered by either Liverpool or Chelsea. Both English clubs might have offered far more lucrative terms than Barca can presently afford.

However, Sport reports that negotiations between Gavi and Barcelona are well advanced and are likely to result in a positive outcome for the Catalan side.

Gavi’s new Barcelona contract

Gavi is poised to sign a five-and-a-half-year deal with Barcelona that will boast a minimum fee release clause of €1 billion – effectively making him unattainable for any interested club. He would not be the first young Barca star to sign a contract that boasts such a hefty release clause: Pedri and Ansu Fati both have such deals put in place.

Head coach Xavi has been one of the driving forces behind getting a deal secured so quickly. Gavi has become one of the untouchable stars in his starting XI and believes that the 17-year-old is “fundamental” to the future of the Barcelona first team going forwards.

Not only has Gavi impressed on the field, he has also shone off it too. His personality is said to make him a delight to work with.

Gavi is set to sign the new Barcelona deal in the coming weeks, with the youngster always having targeted the opportunity to remain at the club while turning his back on the opportunities provided to him by Chelsea and Liverpool.
