Haaland to Barcelona: Transfer possible under these conditions
Barcelona’s hopes of completing a transfer for Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund in the summer are slim – but they are not impossible.
The Camp Nou side were dealt a blow in the build up to the summer with the news that La Liga have given them a negative spending limit for the 2022/23 campaign. It means that Barca have been told that they must make a profit of €144m for the season ahead.
Real Madrid are also pushing to sign Haaland and have been given a budget of €739m to spend next season.
This disparity will make it extremely difficult for Barcelona to make any significant moves in the summer, though they have been told it is not impossible.
Barca told how they can spend
Javier Gomez, the director general of La Liga, explained: “To make signings, Barcelona have to reduce the costs they have now or bring in more income. There's no other way.
“Barcelona's losses are greater than their capacity to bring in income. That's why the spending limit is negative.
“Until Barca recover the net worth that they've lost, the only way they can spend is with the 1:4 rule, where if you save €10m, you can spend €2.5m.
“The only way for Barcelona to sign is by making savings on player contracts, until they generate income.”
Freeing up this budget while keeping the team competitive promises to be a thankless task for president Joan Laporta and his backroom staff.
Where will Haaland go?
There are varying reports as to Haaland’s destination in the summer transfer window, with Real Madrid and Manchester City considered to be the two outstanding favourites to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker.
