Scoring the first goal of a football match is so important, so what Joao Felix has been doing for Atletico Madrid over the past two months has been incredibly valuable for the Spanish side. With seven goals in his last eight matches for the club, the Portuguese talent has placed Atleti back in the top four of LaLiga Santander and led them to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Of those seven goals, five of them have been scored inside the opening 12 minutes of these matches. That was the case again on Saturday night as the 22-year-old opened the scoring against Alaves during the 12th tick of the clock, before scoring another during the final 10 minutes of the 4-1 victory.

His bright starts have been vital, as one of Atletico’s biggest problems this season was scoring the first goal. Now, with Joao Felix plugging himself into the action from the very first minute with urgent play, Diego Simeone’s side are far more dangerous.

Why Joao Felix is not for sale

Atletico Madrid always knew that Joao Felix was special and there was faith at the club that he would come good, even when outsiders doubted the youngster. Now, they are enjoying the fruits of their patience with the Portugal international and they’re starting to see a return on the €127m they paid Benfica for him back in 2019.

This is why there are zero plans at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano to sell Joao Felix. With the forward finally starting to make an impact and lead the team’s attack, the only way Atleti would sell him now is if they miss out on Champions League qualification and need to make up the losses. Even then, they’d prefer to sell other assets before letting Joao Felix walk out the door.

Is it time for Arsenal to drop their interest in Joao Felix?

Arsenal are one of the clubs to have expressed the most serious interest in Joao Felix, but his recent run of form makes a sale even less likely than it already was. Atletico Madrid are happy with their investment, meaning it is time for the Gunners to look elsewhere as they try to make a splash in the transfer market.
