Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro has called on his club’s supporters to stop booing Gareth Bale, suggesting those fans are “whistling at the history of this club”.

Bale has been the subject of mass booing from the Real Madrid faithful over the last few years, with fans critical of his lack of effort for the club, compared to his desire to succeed for the Welsh national team.

Matters reached another boiling point last month after Bale missed out on Real Madrid’s match against Barcelona, before going on to feature for Wales in World Cup qualifying just four days later.

However, Bale’s team-mate Casemiro has jumped to the 32-year-old’s support after he came on as a substitute in their win over Getafe, with the Brazilian saying the entire team needs the same level of encouragement.

“I don’t agree when a player on my team is whistled,” said Casemiro.

“We’re all on the same side, we have to support him.

“It’s never nice to hear a team-mate being whistled by our fans. I heard Bale being whistled the other day and I didn’t like that.

“He’s a historic player. When you whistle him you’re whistling at the history of this club.”

Bale joined Real Madrid in 2013 in a record-breaking €100 million transfer and in his first season at the club, he scored goals in the Copa del Rey and Champions League final.

Since then, he also scored a brace in the Champions League final in 2018 against Liverpool.

In all, over his nine-year tenure at Real Madrid, Bale has made 258 appearances, scoring 106 goals and winning four Champions League titles, two La Liga honours, one Copa del Rey and three FIFA Club World Cups.

Bale’s contract comes to an end this summer and he is to leave the club, with manager Carlo Ancelotti saying he wants to give the Welshman a good farewell.

It is expected that he will continue to have the same role, coming off the bench, for the rest of the season as Real Madrid look to win a league and Champions League double.
