Why Modric has not signed a new Real Madrid contract yet

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has supporters nervous because he is heading for free agency in the summer unless he signs a new contract with the club.
The former Tottenham star has played a key role in Los Blancos’ years of European dominance, having arrived from Spurs in 2012 for €35 million.
Modric may be 36 but he showed once again on Tuesday that he possesses a magic that keeps him at the very top of the game. After all, he is the reason that Real Madrid won through in the Champions League against Chelsea.

Modric’s contract situation
Real Madrid fans should not be too concerned over the understated superstar’s future. Both the club and the player want their relationship to continue but terms must be agreed that will allow them to do so.
That is where there is the hold up presently.
Modric and his representatives want to return to his pre-pandemic contract of around €12 million per year, according to Di Marzio. When the Covid lockdown struck, he voluntarily took a 10% pay cut to help the club. Indeed, there even appears to be a willingness from Modric’s side of things to remain at this new, lower value.
Real Madrid, however, want to cut his contract in a bid to free up space in their wage budget to sign Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland.
Despite this dispute, the odds of Modric remaining at Real Madrid next season and possibly beyond remain high.
