Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been universally recognised as football’s best centre forward over the last three years, yet the Poland international is seeking a transfer away from the Allianz Arena this summer, with Barcelona thought to be leading the race for his signature.

Lewandowski’s record in recent years has been incredible. He has scored 40 goals in all competitions in each of the last seven seasons and has scored at a rate of above one goal per game in each of the last three campaigns.

The 33-year-old poacher, though, is out of contract with Bayern in 2023, meaning this is a big summer for both him and Bayern.

Either he goes now or the Bundesliga club face losing him on a free transfer, just as they have seen David Alaba go to Real Madrid and Niklas Sule commit to Borussia Dortmund over the past 12 months.

With Bayern needing every cent available to continue to compete at the top of the European game, this is clearly a situation that does not suit them.

And with Lewandowski ready to push for a transfer, they have reportedly lined up Benfica forward Darwin Nunez has a replacement, while Sebastien Haller of Ajax is another possible alternative.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that Pini Zahavi, Lewandowski's agent, had arrived in Munich for potentially decisive talks over the player's future, the destiny of which is likely to be made evident soon.

Lewandowski unhappy with Nagelsmann's tactics

Why does the forward, who was signed for a mere €5m from Borussia Dortmund in 2011, want to leave the club so eagerly?

His desire to play in a different league has been well publicised, but it also stretches beyond that.

According to reports, he is frustrated by the tactical choices of head coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Although Bayern now play an ultra-attacking system that effectively sees them line up with five forwards, this is not to Lewandowski’s liking. In recent weeks, for example, he has struggled to link as effectively with partner Thomas Muller and this has led to FCB crashing out of the Champions League to Villarreal.

There are, therefore, a couple of major factors driving Lewandowski away from Bayern and towards a transfer to Barcelona.
