Alves returned to Barcelona earlier in the season after being asked to assist in Xavi's transition as coach, and he made 13 starts in La Liga across the rest of the campaign.

However the 39-year-old was brought in mainly for his experience in the dressing room and would like to stay to help Barcelona compete back in the Champions League next season.

Barcelona slumped to a 2-0 home defeat to Villarreal - just Alves' second loss in the league since returning - but speaking afterwards, the Brazilian reiterated his desire to stay, if the club wants him to.

He said: "I don't know if it's my last game with Barca, I only live in the present, the present is a gift. I think I can continue contributing things, if it depended on me, it would already be done.

“We have to come back [next season] with a different spirit and energy. I think we are very demanding, we have to go for more, for better things. The feeling is that it has been an unstable season, there were very good moments and others not so good. To achieve things, you have to be stable and a more balanced team."

Waiting to find out his future, Alves explained that in his second spell at Barça, after signing last November at the age of 37, he came with a different function than when he arrived in the summer of 2008. of things,

"I always do my part, it is how I live it and how I feel it, I am happy with my dedication and with what I put in, hopefully I can be here next year. If not, [I am] 1000% grateful to all the people."

Barcelona face a huge summer of restructuring with a number of transfer targets being identified, including the likes of Raphinha from Leeds United and Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.
