Over the last week, rumours of a possible transfer to Manchester United for Frenkie de Jong have increased, with Barcelona potentially open to selling the midfielder.

De Jong could be one of Barcelona’s biggest sales, as the Blaugrana look to make up funds through the sales of some of their players, and Manchester United could be an interested party.

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag has seemingly made it clear he needs to improve the Red Devils’ midfield, and De Jong is seen as a top candidate for the position, as their previous working relationship at Ajax was successful.

How much are Man Utd willing to pay for De Jong?

However, Manchester United will only make a move if the price is right, and Ten Hag is aware he can’t spend a large amount on one player as they need to reinforce elsewhere in order to qualify for the Champions League once again.

When they signed him in 2019, Barcelona paid a fee of €75 million for the Dutchman, and the Catalans will be keen on recovering a large chunk of that should they sell De Jong.

Barca president Joan Laporta recently said that his priority is to secure the “financial health” of the club and did not close the door on any potential sales in the summer window.

Man Utd, however, have named their price and how much they’re willing to pay for the ex-Ajax player: a fee of €82m at maximum, as they hope to bring in other players as well.

In recent months, the Red Devils have targeted other midfielders as well, including Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez and Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips, while other stars like Jurrien Timber and Darwin Nunez have also been linked.

Earlier in the season, interim boss Ralf Rangnick made it clear that there needs to be a big rebuild and several players will depart the club as they aim to return to the Champions League in the next season.

Barcelona, meanwhile, haven’t made it clear who they’re open to selling, but there will be a host of top stars on the list as they look to get out of their difficult financial situation as soon as possible.
