Barcelona’s financial crisis is such that the club may not be able to pay all its players on 30 June and will force them to consider new salary reductions within their squad, according to a report from AS.

Barca had been expected to complete several financial deals in the weeks ahead to allow them to stave off such a situation, yet the club have pulled out of talks with CVC that would have seen them sell little over 8% of their television rights for the next 40 years to the investors.

This has blown a €270 million hole in their finances.

AS stresses that the situation is not a unique one in the history of Barcelona. During the reign of Josep Maria Bartomeu as president, they have suffered a similar rush to raise funds to pay the salaries of players.

The situation is more complicated this time because Barcelona find themselves in the midst of a dispute between La Liga and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, who continues to champion a new European Super League.

La Liga can help Barca via the CVC deal, which it wants them to accept in order to force the Camp Nou club to resign from the Super League project. As such, it will not otherwise offer Barcelona any financial aid with regards their wage cap.

Firstly, there are other areas of the club that can be sold to raise capital, including BLM, which is the arm of the club that is used to maximise merchandising income. It is reported that 49.9% of this will be sold off.

Equally, there could be player sales. Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United is an obvious example, while Clement Lenglet is also on the shortlist of Tottenham.

Big earners are once again expected to be asked to reduce their wages. Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are set to be the players who will have to make the biggest effort.

Until this problem is solved, it means Barcelona can forget about transfers, such as the signing of Robert Lewandowski.
