Barcelona midfielder Gavi has an offer of a new contract on the table as the club seeks to stave off the transfer interest coming from Manchester United and Liverpool.

The 17-year-old was the breakout star of world football during the 2021/22 season as he shone in the heart of the Barca midfield, despite the club enduring a mediocre season overall by their standards.

However, his future could be out of Barcelona’s hands unless they can get him to sign a new contract.

Both Man Utd and Liverpool are said to have the player in their sights, yet there is a belief in Spain that Gavi firmly sees his future at Camp Nou.

Nevertheless, the Catalan side want to ensure that, and in order to do so, they need him to sign a new deal.

ESPN reports that there is an offer on the table for him.

This is significant because it will tie the player to the club beyond 2023, when his current contract is up. More importantly, though, it will strip away a €50 million release clause in his present deal, which makes him a highly attractive player for the continent’s best sides to target.

Indeed, the clause in his contract made him vulnerable to leave this summer given that the type of clubs who have registered an interest in him could easily afford such an amount for a player valued by FootballTransfers at €39m, with that figure rapidly increasing.

For the moment, there is no evidence that the either club is ready to trigger that figure, but as long as it looms over the teenager, there will inevitably be concern.

Equally pressing for Barca, though, is their present financial situation, which could stop them registering players and will reportedly see several key figures asked to take pay cuts.

Gavi’s contract extension could be made possible, however, should Ousmane Dembele depart the club or accept a contract for a lower wage, while the possible sale of Frenkie de Jong would also make a new deal possible.
