Barcelona’s Gerard Pique is apparently not a part of the club’s plans next season after manager Xavi decided against counting on the club legend for the upcoming campaign.

It was reported on Monday that the Barcelona head coach had a meeting with the defender and told Pique that the defender was not going to be relied upon much next season as the club looks to get back on track.

As a result, club President Joan Laporta also had a conversation with Pique to understand his wishes for next season and see what condition is like as he recovers from an injury that troubled him in the 2021/22 campaign.

Pique, though, is determined to continue his Barcelona career and play as much as possible for Xavi’s side, and has made a series of promises to the President to prove his worth to the club.

What has Pique promised ahead of next season?

The first promise Pique made was to separate his professional life from his football career – his personal issues, including his separation from pop star Shakira, has dominated the headlines for a few weeks.

The Barcelona number three also promised to reduce his social media activities – Pique is constantly active on platforms like Instagram and Twitter, and he also said he would cut down his Twitch streams to focus on football.

Pique started his Twitch channel in August 2021 and is constantly active on the platform, having amassed over 523,000 followers over the last year.

Additionally, Pique promised to separate himself from his business ventures and focus on football – the Catalan has several business interests including a media investment group, owning FC Andorra and more.

Within those investments, he has created several events and initiatives including a poker tournament, the official Balloon World Cup and more.

Finally, Pique said that he would accept the wage cut proposed to him to help the club’s financial situation – he already accepted cuts over the years, but is willing to lower down to continue playing for Barcelona.

In recent months, Pique has been at the centre of controversy in Spanish football for his reported links with Spanish FA boss Luis Rubiales and his desire to take the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia.

That made him the centre of attention in a conflict-of-interest issue, and Pique has been a widely-criticised figure across Spanish football for the revelations that have come out in recent times.

For a professional footballer, Pique does seem to have a lot of time on his hands for other activities, which has become a concern for Xavi as he tries to assemble the best team for next season to compete for titles on all fronts.
