Atletico Madrid want Luis Suarez repeat with Lewandowski raid on Barca

Atletico Madrid are ready to raid Barcelona for a prolific goal scorer and are hoping to enjoy the type of success they did when they captured Luis Suarez from the Blaugrana in 2020.

According to a report from Sport, Atleti are ready to chance their arm and make a big-money move for Lewandowski in the summer.

The Poland international veteran is already targeted by clubs in the Saudi Pro League, with the financial might of that up-and-coming division make a deal complicated for Los Colchoneros.

Indeed, a transfer looks improbable at this stage, with Lewandowski’s departure not factoring into Barcelona’s plans.

Instead, the Camp Nou outfit are ready to part with the striker in 2025 without taking up the option of an additional year on his contract. This is because they want Erling Haaland to take his place, with talks over a move for the Norway international forward having already started with agent Rafaela Pimenta.

Such plans can change, though.

Suarez all over again

It was not expected that Atletico Madrid would be able to sign Luis Suarez from Barca as they did four years ago. Initially, it seemed that he was destined to sign for Juventus, but complications over his Italian citizenship helped thwart that move.

It was Diego Simeone’s side who benefitted, with Suarez leading the club to the 2020/21 LaLiga title.

In total, he scored 34 goals in 85 appearances for Atleti, and the side from the Wanda Metropolitano seem to be of the belief that Lewandowski could have a similar impact at the club.

The 35-year-old Pole is one of the best goal scorers of his generation and has already struck 53 times for Barca in just 85 outings.

Doubts were cast over his ability earlier this season as he went through a dry spell of form, but he has returned to prominence to such an extent that he has left €40 million January signing Vitor Roque frustrated at his lack of game time.
