PSG have been told to pay Kylian Mbappe outstanding wages and bonuses of up to €55 million by the French Football Association (FFF) as the latest round in the dispute between the two parties fell in favour of the Real Madrid player.

Mbappe and PSG have been fighting an increasingly bitter war over the course of the last five months over payments owed to the France international striker.

The French League (LFP) had previously indicated that it backed Mbappe in the case and ordered the Ligue 1 champions to stump up the money.

However, PSG decided to take up their right to appeal, but the FFF has now knocked this back. The club is, therefore, still in debt to Mbappe to the tune of €55m.

Kylian Mbappe vs PSG: Why is there a dispute?

Mbappe and PSG have had problems dating back months. These arose when the player refused to take up an optional year in his contract at the club and instead moved to Real Madrid in the summer.

The first problems were made clear as far back as summer 2023, when Mbappe was excluded from PSG training and even missed the first match of the 2023/24 campaign because of the issue.

The 25-year-old finally departed the Parc des Princes club in the summer as a free agent to join Real Madrid, much to the annoyance of the PSG hierarchy. Their anger was amplified because they believed the player had made a promise that he would forego a loyalty bonus if he completed a switch to Los Blancos.

None of this, however, was put in writing. A further complicating factor was that Mbappe reportedly met with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi in private, with even his mother and agent Fayza Lamari excluded from the talks. Exactly what was said between the pair is, therefore, unclear.

The case has helped fuel public sentiment in France against Mbappe, who has missed his country’s last four Nations League matches, preferring to build his form with Real Madrid.

What next for Mbappe?

PSG could attempt to appeal this decision further, which could see the case being taken to the law courts.

The Ligue 1 club appear determined to take this as far as possible, despite their argument against Mbappe appearing flimsy at best.

The Real Madrid striker, meanwhile, will continue his quest to win over his new club after being made a scapegoat for their poor start to the season.
