Kylian Mbappe injury: Real Madrid face ‘worst possible news’
Kylian Mbappe’s Real Madrid career faces a new injury setback after the France international picked up a hamstring problem during Los Blancos’ 3-2 Champions League victory over Atalanta.
Mbappe has made a rocky start in the Spanish capital, and shortly after he seemed to get his Bernabeu career back on track with a well-taken goal, he was forced off with a physical complaint.
The manner the France international took his goal against the in-form Italians was glorious – a wonderful first touch then a driven finish – yet his night was overshadowed as he limped off 10 minutes before half-time.
Cadena SER spoke of Real Madrid facing up to the “worst possible news” regarding Mbappe, while AS has reported that the “feelings are bad”.
Ancelotti confirms Mbappe hamstring injury
In contrast to the media, Los Blancos’ boss Carlo Ancelotti has moved to play down the severity of the striker’s injury.
Speaking after the game, the Italian said: “It's an overload, a discomfort in the hamstring. It doesn't seem to be anything serious - we'll see tomorrow. He couldn't sprint, it bothered him a little and we preferred to replace him.”
For Mbappe, this is a potentially significant setback. After looking out of sorts for weeks following his free transfer from PSG in the summer, he was on track to produce arguably his best performance since netting twice against Real Betis on 1 September.
He has had hamstring issues before, notably missing a month of the 2019/20 campaign with PSG because of the problem. He also spent a few days in 2022/23 laid up because of the muscle.

Real Madrid’s injury woes continue
Further tests on Mbappe will reveal the extent of his injury after these preliminary thoughts, yet the overall picture of Real Madrid’s injury situation is bleak, with this just the latest issue in a campaign riddled with such problems.
AS points out: “The Atalanta match was Ancelotti’s 23rd game this season and there have already been 27 players lost to injury. Add to that Alaba already started the season with an ACL injury from the previous year.
“In total, among the 15 injured players, they have missed a total of 94 matches.”
Mbappe’s injury against Atalanta will only fuel the debate over what exactly is going on at the Bernabeu this season.
