Barcelona are seeking to secure a blockbuster transfer, in which Frenkie de Jong will play a pivotal role for Hansi Flick’s side.

Jamal Musiala of Bayern Munich is a player that has emerged as a dream target for Barcelona, according to Sport. Hansi Flick’s ambition is to reunite with a player he has previously worked with at Bayern and in his capacity as Germany head coach. Indeed, it was the Barca boss who gave him his professional debut.

Musiala enjoys great popularity with Barcelona's sporting leadership. He is seen as a player who can play both on the wing and in midfield. His ability to be a threat in one-on-one situations is also highly valued. This is a quality that the team currently lacks. At the moment, only Lamine Yamal has this talent, which is essential to break open teams that drop deep.

Jamal Musiala: A difficult deal for Barca

The arrival of the Germany international star does not seem easy. Musiala is tied to the Allianz Arena until mid-2026, but he is already in talks about a contract extension. However, the new contract reportedly contains a relatively affordable buyout clause. What this is or when it might become active has not yet been made clear.

Musiala’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), meanwhile, stands at a whopping €108.4 million.

The biggest problem Barca face, however, is not the transfer fee, but the salary that Musiala is liable to command. Barcelona would have to free up a “significant amount” in their wage budget to cover the salary and the annual depreciation of his contract. Bayern are poised to offer him a new deal worth a staggering €25m per year.

If Barcelona are to land Musiala, then, the departure of De Jong is therefore described as crucial.

The collaboration between the Netherlands international and Barcelona runs until 2026, but so far neither he nor his agents have given any signal about a possible contract extension.

What is clear is that the departure of the 27-year-old Dutchman would create considerable space within the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. However, the expectation is that the midfielder wants to serve out his contract and then leave on a free transfer, putting Barca’s hopes of landing Musiala in tatters.
