The Uruguay international striker has failed to make a positive impression on Arne Slot and, after missing a crucial penalty against PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday, seems to have sealed his fate at Liverpool as a result.

Atletico Madrid have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old striker, but CEO Angel Gil Marin ruled out a deal.

“Nunez is not in our plans for future signings," he told Futbol. "The reports about our interest in the player are unfounded. Although we are not looking for a striker, we are focused on strengthening other positions in the team.”

Darwin has taken it upon himself to look for a new club, with Fichajes reporting that he has “offered himself to Barcelona”.

Darwin Nunez has Barcelona dream

Like team-mate Luis Diaz, who is known to dream of playing for the Blaugrana, Nunez would love to play for the Camp Nou club. He has long expressed his admiration for the Catalan side.

A deal looks difficult. While Barcelona have one eye on a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, the ongoing strength of the Poland international means that they are under no obligations to sign a striker in the summer.

Barca have doubts over Darwin Nunez’s ability to play for the club, with his seven goals this season failing to win over any doubters.

With a contract that runs until 2028, any move for him would also require a significant investment. Nunez’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €67.5 million, and with money still tight for the Blaugrana, they may well see the South American, who is under contract until 2028, as being an expensive gamble they cannot afford.

Indeed, Darwin could prove a transfer headache for Liverpool, who will want to recoup as much of their club-record €85m outlay on him as possible.
