Real Madrid took a step towards the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, yet they remain on a collision course with Vinicius Junior.

Vini Jr is under contract with Madrid until 2027 but negotiations are open over a new deal primarily because of interest in the player from the Saudi Pro League.

There have been rumours that the Brazil international could be lured to the Middle East in a world-record deal that could also see him command an astronomical wage. While the will of the player appears to be that he will stay with Los Blancos, the weight of Saudi’s financial offer could yet prise him away.

Real Madrid have a card to play, though. Vini Jr is interested in being given a major role at the Bernabeu and was pleased to be made captain when his side faced Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey.

Vini Jr makes Mbappe demand

Beyond that, he wants comparable pay to Kylian Mbappe. On the face of it, he has that given both reportedly earn €15m per year, but Vini feels that the €40m signing-on bonus the Frenchman received for signing last summer means he has a status above his, AS reports.

As such, the South American wants a pay rise of €5m per year as a form of compensation.

While this would make Vini Jr Real Madrid’s best-paid player, it would give some form of financial equality to Mbappe, in the eyes of the Brazilian.

It remains to be seen what concessions Los Blancos are willing to make in their attempts to pin the forward down on a new long-term deal, but there are dressing room ramifications, such as how Mbappe will react if his colleague is given a substantially higher salary than him.

As ever, when big players and big egos are involved, the situation is a complicated one, with Saudi Arabia’s interest in Vini providing the catalyst for the uncertainty.
