Ousmane Dembele set Barcelona back a cool €145 when he joined from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and he could cost them another massive sum when he leaves again!

Dembele's Barcelona career has been a curious one. Just 20 when he joined, stories of late nights playing video games and turning up late to training plagued his early season.

But he enjoyed a second wind under Xavi last term, and ended the campaign with 13 assists from his 21 La Liga outings.

Chelsea and PSG were among the clubs linked with a move for the French winger, but when none materialised, he re-signed with Barca, and he has been good for it, with another six goal-involvements already this season.

But the new Barca deal has reportedly stored up a future problem for Barca. The Blaugrana are understood to be considering cashing in on Dembele in January - especially if they can spirit Marco Asensio away from Real Madrid - but the winger stands to gain if they do.

50/50 deal

"The Frenchman signed a two-year contract extension with Barça in the summer, and has a mere €100 million release clause," write Barca Universal.

"Reports have stated that should a club trigger that, and Dembele push to move, he would pocket €50 million of the total payment as part of a clause in his contract."

Barca also have Raphinha, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati on their books, so they are well stocked in the wide attacking areas, but if they were only to see half of Dembele's value on selling him, they may hold onto him after all.

Xavi would apparently like to keep Dembele even if the top brass sense an opportunity to further balance the club's books.

"Xavi wants two wide wingers, who take people on one-on-one, provide assists, and score goals," explained Dembele recently. "His approach to football suits me very well."
