Barcelona already want to offer Dembele a new contract
Barcelona are already seeking to tie Ousmane Dembele down to a new contract, reports in Spain state.
Dembele only penned a new deal with Barca in July following the expiration of his previous deal, but his excellent form has quickly persuaded the Catalan side that they need to work on ensuring the long-term future of the club is at Camp Nou.
Presently, the former Dortmund player’s contract only runs until 2024 and crucially it has a clause in it that will allow the winger to depart for just €50 million next summer should a bid come in. This is particularly problematic because it is a deal that strongly favours the player and his agent, with a reported €25m of that figure destined for them should a transfer be made.
Given Dembele’s form, he looks a bargain at that price and would doubtless attract some of the leading clubs around Europe in this case. Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain were two teams who were notably interested in him last summer only for no move to be made.
Barca desperate for a renewal
Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona are working urgently to change this situation.
Head coach Xavi is a particular fan of the player, hailing him as potentially the best player in the world in his position, and is eager to keep hold of him.
No contact has been made as yet but it could be a difficult negotiation for Barcelona judging how hard they had to work to get him to sign a renewal.
Dembele has amply proven his worth to the club since then. He has played eight times this season for a total of just 555 minutes and has directly contributed to six goals in that time, scoring two of his own and creating four more for his team-mates. Barcelona will not want to see him go – especially for the type of price that is being discussed.
