Pique went into the season knowing his first-team place was in doubt and the signings of Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen didn’t help that.

The club had some plans for him, but many within it were surprised when Pique announced his retirement and may now look to make changes in the January transfer window.

It was believed Barcelona would try and activate some levers to get transfers over the line but that may now seem difficult and they will be helped by the wages they have freed up.

Barcelona could make transfer moves

Pique was one of the highest-earners in the Barcelona squad and his retirement means that they have some more financial freedom for the next transfer window.

Xavi has two requirements for his team for the transfer window – at first, he wants to improve at right-back, with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta a target.

Barcelona currently have the likes of Hector Bellerin and Sergi Roberto to play at right-back, and have used Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo there in the past.

They want a permanent solution to the problem and are looking to sign someone to help them for the rest of the season.

On the other hand, having a centre-back to replace Pique is not ruled out either with Inigo Martinez of Athletic Club linked to them in recent times.

Additionally, their future plans include signing a midfielder and that could be accelerated in the winter, in order to boost their side for the second half of the season.

Pique’s departure has given the club a small financial boost at a time they needed it and it is something they will look to take advantage of to make the best of their season.
