‘Scum club’ – How the world reacted to Greenwood’s Getafe transfer

Mason Greenwood completed a shock Deadline Day loan move from Manchester United to La Liga outfit Getafe.
Greenwood had been expected to leave the Red Devils, but they have quietly loaned him to Getafe following an 18-month period in which he had been suspended and subject to an internal investigation over his behaviour.
The one-time capped England international striker had been charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. These were subsequently dropped in February when a key witness withdrew their testimony.

Although the charges were dropped, Greenwood remains one of the most divisive players in the game.
A supremely talented forward, many clubs were unwilling to touch him following the incidents since January 2022, although there were links with potential moves to Turkey and Italy before he eventually completed a switch to Getafe.

Reaction to Greenwood to Getafe
This is reflected by the social media comments made after he completed his move to Getafe.
“Obviously Spanish football doesn’t care about women. Scum club,” one user posted.
In a similar vein, it was said: “The women’s World Cup final and this speaks volumes of how girls are looked at in Spanish football, grim signing.”
Another added: “We will support any team Greenwood is playing against.” This was a common sentiment among users commenting on the issue.

“Relegation can’t come soon enough,” it was said, with another user replying with: “liquidation*”
Despite the backlash from many against the Greenwood deal, there remains a minority who continue to support the 21-year-old.
“Mason Greenwood—the original STARBOY and Manchester United's finest generational talent ever. Please take very good care of him for us,” a pro-Greenwood commenter said.
The vast majority of comments, though, were condemning Getafe’s decision to sign the player.
