Greenwood gets Man Utd hope amid surprising stance on Barcelona transfer
Mason Greenwood is determined to continue his career at Manchester United if at all possible, a report indicates.
The Sun states that Greenwood feels that he has a “debt” that he owes the club and will return to Old Trafford if the club is willing to accept him.
The 22-year-old finds himself out on loan at Getafe following investigations from both the police and club into his private life.
Although the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped charges against the forward following the withdrawal of a key witness, Man Utd decided that it was unsuitable that Greenwood continued to represent them.
Nevertheless, he would turn down the opportunity to sign for Barcelona if it meant another shot at United – where he would be sure to be made felt unwelcome by opposing supporters.
An anonymous source told the Sun: “Mason respected the decision Manchester United made to send him to Spain, but he always wanted to return to the team after the police investigation involving him came to an end.
“He believes he has a debt to repay the fans and the manager and would love a second chance.
"To him, Manchester United is the biggest and best club in the world and if a chance emerged for him to go back he would.
"Barcelona are among a number of clubs interested in signing him.
"But if United threw him a lifeline to resurrect his career at Old Trafford, he’d be on the quickest flight home.”
After scoring seven goals in 24 outings for Getafe, there has been speculation that United could have a change of heart.
Ten Hag wanted to keep Greenwood
Erik ten Hag wanted to keep Greenwood in his squad, despite the nature of the accusations levelled against him.
“Ten Hag was always keen to keep Mason but that decision, in the end, was taken out of his hands,” the Sun quotes the source as having said.
"If the chance emerges for the player to come back then he’d instantly become a key part of Ten Hag’s plans.”
The ball, it seems, is in Manchester United's court.
