Mason Greenwood: La Liga president hopes 'innocent' Man Utd star stays in Spain

Manchester United will have plenty of suitors in Spain should they look to cash in on Mason Greenwood this summer, with La Liga president Javier Tebas revealing he ‘doesn’t care’ about the controversy surrounding the Getafe loanee.

Greenwood has not played for United since his arrest in early 2022, with the club choosing to loan him to Getafe last summer after announcing that the 22-year-old ‘will continue his career away from Old Trafford’.

The forward has been impressive in Spain, with his five goals and five assists supposedly attracting the attention of teams such as Barcelona and Sevilla, who will hope to sign him on a cut-price team permanently in the summer.

Tebas insisted he would like to see Greenwood remain in Spain and feels there is no issues with English youngster as he is ‘innocent’ after charges against him were dropped.

“Greenwood was not condemned, so I don’t care,” Tebas said at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit. “I’m a lawyer. For someone that has come out of a legal case innocent, there’s nothing to say. I think it’s good because he’s another great player.

“Maybe the circumstances have made it easier for him to come but he’s a great player and I have got no other comments to make.

“He’s doing really well at Getafe as a player and I hope he continues to be successful and he continues to stay in Spanish football because that’s always good for us.”

United open to Greenwood comeback, claims Ratcliffe

United will look to sell Greenwood in the summer when he enters the final year of his contract despite new board member Sir Jim Ratcliffe admitting he was open to the academy graduate returning to the club.

“We will make a decision,” Ratcliffe said earlier this month. "All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?

“He’s a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football. There is no decision that’s been made.

“The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try and come to fair decision on the basis of values, which is basically is he a good guy or not?

"Could he play sincerely for Manchester United well, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?"

United will need to sell players in the summer in order to sign their top targets and Greenwood is expected to command a fee of more than €30 million if he is sold, meaning they may choose to cash in and completely end his association with the club, with the player himself said to be uninterested at returning to Old Trafford.
