Kylian Mbappe could have earned significantly more if he had joined Real Madrid in 2022 according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

Mbappe looks to finally be Madrid-bound after informing Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi of his intention to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Whilst PSG will shed approximately €200 million a year from their wage bill, they are also losing an asset worth €122.5m per FootballTransfers' in-house algorithm for nothing - quite aside from his world class contributions on the field.

Mbappe nearly joined Real in 2022 before U-turning and signing a contract in Paris which made him the highest-paid player in world football at the time, but there is little chance of that happening now.

Mbappe's mind made up

"The feeling is really strong with the Real Madrid board," Romano told his official YouTube channel. "They believe that this time they that they are all set to make it happen. This is why, some weeks ago in early January 2024, Real Madrid sent their formal contract proposal to Kylian Mbappe, his mother and his camp.

"Now they have to proceed to the signing stage, this is the crucial moment. The salary offer will be way lower than the one proposed in the summer of 2022, and also the signing on fee is lower than the one proposed in 2022."

Romano went on to say that Mbappe will not entertain any subsequent offer from PSG - no new contract, proposal, pay rise and no new players signed on his behalf.

Neymar's move to the Saudi Pro League last summer and the subsequent signing of Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona to replace him was widely considered to be at the behest of Mbappe.

Mbappe earns a basic €72m a season at PSG before bonuses and other revenue streams, while the top earner at Real is currently Toni Kroos on €24.4m.
