No Messi!? Yamal and the three Barcelona stars to get a Bernabeu standing ovation
When Lamine Yamal was taken off in Spain’s game against Brazil, the Santiago Bernabeu gave the Barcelona player a standing ovation.
The 16-year-old delivered a performance for the ages at Real Madrid’s home ground as Spain drew 3-3 against the South American nation.
Even at such a young age, Yamal is achieving things that even the world's best-ever player Lionel Messi was unable to.
But the teenager is not the first Barcelona player to receive such a warm reception following a spellbinding display on enemy territory - it's has happened to three other Barca players at the famous Bernabeu.
Here FootballTransfers goes through the rare occasions when Real Madrid fans applauded Barcelona players at their own ground.
Ronaldinho
Ronaldinho was the world’s best player in 2015 - and this was noted by Real Madrid fans who clapped the Brazilian ace after his display at their home ground. The attacker dribbled through the Los Blancos' defence twice and secured two superb goals to help Barca win 3-0.
Andres Iniesta
In 2015, Iniesta scored a brilliant goal in Barca's 0-4 win at the Bernabeu, as Real Madrid got turned over in their own backyard. As Iniesta was subbed off, to everyone’s surprise, the entire stadium applauded him. It was a rare occasion but it could be down to his winner at the 2010 World Cup final.
Maradona
In June 1983, at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, Argentine superstar Maradona, then near the peak of his ability, delivered a breathtaking goal. The attacker was fed in the ball and skillfully maneuvered past the goalkeeper. The touch was a bit too heavy but he managed to dribble it back onto his left foot. Madrid defender Juan Jose ran in to intercept, but Maradona’s touch took him entirely out of the equation, resulting in a collision with the goalpost. After scoring, the Real Madrid fans applauded the legendary player.
