Antoine Griezmann has announced his retirement from international football with immediate effect.

The Atletico Madrid attacker made the announcement on social media with an emotional video.

He has quit Les Bleus as his country’s joint-third all-time caps winner, equal with Olivier Giroud on 137, while with 44 international goals, he stands fourth on France’s all-time list behind only Giroud, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe.

Perhaps the most extraordinary record that Griezmann holds for France, though, was playing 84 consecutive international matches for his country over the span of nearly seven years.

Griezmann won the 2018 World Cup with France as well as the 2020/21 Nations League.

What did Griezmann say?

On Instagram, he posted: “Today, with the most profound emotions, I’m announcing my retirement as a player from the France team.

“In 10 incredible years marked by defeats, successes and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn a page and to leave my place to a new generation.

“Wearing this shirt has been an honour and a privilege. From March 2014 until September, I’ve had the chance to experience incredible moments beside some exceptional teammates.

“We’ve experienced some victories that will be forever etched in our memories. So thanks for these precious memories that we have created together.

“I also want to thank the supporters, who were always there, in the joyful moments just as those when there were doubts. Your passion, your fervour and your loyalty have been a real source of energy for me.

“An enormous thanks also to the staff of the France team and everyone who works in the shadows at Clairefontaine and when we travel.

“And finally, thanks to my coach. Your confidence and your friendship throughout my international career have been essential to my development on and off the field.

“I leave the France team with a profound feeling of pride and gratitude. I had the honour of representing our country and experienced extraordinary moments, like that when we became champions of the world.

“I’ll continue to follow Les Bleus with passion and to continue to support this team, which gave me everything.

“I’m convinced the future is promising and I’m looking forward to seeing the future generation shine.

“Thanks to everyone for your love and support. See you soon, Antoine.”

Griezmann remains available for Atletico Madrid and is expected to face Benfica on Wednesday in the Champions League.
