Nico Williams reveals 'only thing that matters' after Barcelona snub

Nico Williams insists that he is not thinking about his future after turning down a move to Barcelona in the summer.

The Spain star was one of Europe's most in-demand players in the previous transfer window. Fitted with a release clause worth just €58 million, many clubs saw him as a market opportunity, though they did baulk at his wage demands.

The 22-year-old was coming off a spectacular Euro 2024 campaign with his country and Arsenal, Chelsea and especially Barcelona were hot on his trail. The latter made him their top target but were forced to move on to Dani Olmo when it became clear that Williams would stay with Athletic Club.

The winger decided to remain with his boyhood club, determined to reach the Europa League final with them this season given that it will be hosted in their famous San Mames stadium.

What happens next summer is anyone's guess and Williams insists that even he does not know yet.

Williams breaks silence

Speaking to El Mundo for a lengthy interview, the Spaniard opened up on his turbulent summer window and his non-existent plans for the future."In the end, you have to live with it," Williams said.

"Football works like this, with many interests from clubs, the media, the players and there is always noise. It is neither bad nor good, it is what it is and it does not affect my performance. I continue doing the same job that I have done until now.

"On a personal level, there have also been tough times in which you stop to think about many scenarios and it is difficult, but I have an incredible family and friends who support me. I want to think that this will not happen to me every summer.

"I'm not thinking about [the future] right now. The fans are very happy that I'm staying here and I'm very happy to be here. Bilbao is my home, I want to continue enjoying it and the truth is that I'm very happy.

"I've always had things very clear and I think people see that. I think I'm doing really well and trying to take Athletic to the top in Spain and in Europe, with that final in San Mames that excites us so much. That's the only thing that matters now."
