Ancelotti will leave Madrid at the end of a disappointing season in which the club are set to win neither La Liga, the Champions League or Copa del Rey.

The Italian is now close to taking over the Brazil national team in time for the 2026 World Cup.

Allegri to Real Madrid?

Xabi Alonso is Madrid’s first target to replace Ancelotti and is still expected to get the job.

Alonso is a former Madrid midfielder who has enjoyed great success now as a manager at Bayer Leverkusen, winning the domestic double last season unbeaten.

But if the Alonso deal falls through, Madrid will return to Allegri, who they were close to appointing back in 2021.

"I have to thank Real Madrid and the president for the opportunity he gave me [to coach Real Madrid]. Then I thought about it and chose Juventus," Allegri said when he returned to Juventus for a second spell that summer.

"It was a gesture of love for a club that gave me a lot and who I enjoy coaching."

Allegri is one of the most successful coaches in the history of Italian football. The 57-year-old has won six Serie A titles - five of them at Juventus and one with Milan. He also reached two Champions League finals with Juve, both lost.

However, his stock has fallen dramatically in recent years - so much so that he has been labelled by some in Italy as a 'dinosaur' who has failed to adapt to the changes in the modern game.

Allegri is famed for being an ultra-conservative coach, who proposes a deep defensive line and counter-attacking football. He dislikes possession or progressive football.

After initially leaving Juventus in 2019, he returned to the club in 2021 after two years out of the game.

His return to Juve was largely a disaster, with the Bianconeri setting a whole host of negative historical records under his command.

They never finished closer than 16 points away from the eventual champions in all three seasons back in Turin, while they performed abysmally in the Champions League.

Allegri was sacked last summer a year before his contract ended, although he did at least finish on a high by winning the Coppa Italia.
