Pedri heartbreak: The players OUT of Euro 2024 due to injury
The 2024 European Championship is here after the tournament opener on 14 June.
International managers were required to submit their final squad by 7 June, hoping that all their biggest hitters were fit and ready to go.
However, the availability of all their eligible players was ultimately out of each manager's control.

Thankfully, the tournament has thus far only seen a couple of frightening injuries. Kieran Tierney, Barnabas Varga, Filip Kostic and Kylian Mbappe all suffered high-profile injuries, but the latter swiftly returned to action after his broken nose, while the nations of the others crashed out in the group stage.
Pedri has become the latest star to be struck down by injury. The Spaniard was clattered by former El Clasico rival Toni Kroos mere minutes into Germany's quarter-final clash with Spain and sustained a tournament-ending knee injury.
Below is a comprehensive list of all the players who missed Euro 2024 altogether or got injured in the group stage...
What players missed Euro 2024 with injury?
A number of players have not been selected due to injury or illness and will therefore miss Euro 2024.
Group A
- Serge Gnabry (Germany)
- Aleksandar Pavlovic (Germany)
- Lewis Ferguson (Scotland)
- Aaron Hickey (Scotland)
- Lyndon Dykes (Scotland)
- Ben Doak (Scotland)
- Kieran Tierney (Scotland)
- Barnabas Varga (Hungary)
In early May, Bayern Munich confirmed that Serge Gnabry would miss the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring injury against Real Madrid. He was excluded from Germany’s Euro 2024 squad as a result.
Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson will also miss the tournament after an ACL injury. His absence will be a huge blow to Scotland, who have also been robbed of Aaron Hickey due to a hamstring injury, Lyndon Dykes due to an ankle injury and Ben Doak due to a knee injury.
Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney's rotten injury luck has continued, with the Scotland star missing the rest of the competition after suffering damage to his knee in his country's second group game against Switzerland.
Bayern Munich's Aleksandar Pavlovic was named in Germany's squad for Euro 2024 but just two days before the tournament was due to start he was withdrawn due to tonsillitis. Pavlovic was replaced by Borussia Dortmund midfielder Emre Can.
Hungary were relatively free of injury heading into Euro 2024 but Barnabas Varga suffered a frightening head injury against Scotland in the group stage.
Group B
- Yeremy Pino (Spain)
- Gavi (Spain)
- Isco (Spain)
- Destiny Udogie (Italy)
- Domenico Berardi (Italy)
- Nicolo Zaniolo (Italy)
- Francesco Acerbi (Italy)
- Giorgio Scalvini (Italy)
Group B will be missing several big stars, with Spain and Italy without numerous players due to injury. Yeremy Pino and Gavi are both absent thanks to ACL injuries, while Isco will miss Euro 2024 due to a diaphyseal fracture in the fibula of his left leg suffered against Las Palmas.
As for Italy, they are decimated. They are without three first-teamers in Francesco Acerbi (groin), Domenico Berardi (Achilles) and Giorgio Scalvini, who heartbreakingly suffered an ACL injury on the final day of the Serie A season.
They will also be without Destiny Udogie (quadricep) and Nicolo Zaniolo (foot), while another first-teamer in Sandro Tonali is out with a betting ban.
Group C
- Tyrone Mings (England)
- Ben Chilwell (England)
- Harry Maguire (England)
- Filip Kostic (Serbia)
Several high-profile England players will play no part in the tournament, with Gareth Southgate omitting the likes of Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling.
Ben Chilwell’s omission was largely injury-based, with the Chelsea man mustering just 10 minutes of action in the final 12 Premier League games of the season due to a knee issue.
Tyrone Mings hasn’t featured since the opening day of the 2023-24 campaign after suffering an ACL injury against Newcastle United - hence his exclusion.
Harry Maguire is the most notable exclusion from England's squad, with the Manchester United defender unable to be included in the Three Lions' final squad due to injury.
Furthermore, Jordan Henderson started Ajax’s final three Eredivisie games, but his prior injury was a major reason why he wasn’t selected. However, he was fit by the end of the season and his omission may also have been due to his lack of form.
Serbia and Juventus star Filip Kostic suffered a heartbreaking knee injury in his country's opener against England and will miss the rest of the tournament.
Group D
- Lucas Hernandez (France)
- Wesley Fofana (France)
- Boubacar Kamara (France)
- Marten de Roon (Netherlands)
- Sven Botman (Netherlands)
- Quilindschy Hartman (Netherlands)
- Jurrien Timber (Netherlands)
- Marten De Roon (Netherlands)
- Frenkie de Jong (Netherlands)
- Teun Koopmeiners (Netherlands)
- David Alaba (Austria)
- Matty Cash (Poland)
- Arkadiusz Milik (Poland)
France and the Netherlands are missing a host of players due to injury.
Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana was unlikely to make the squad anyway, but his chances were ruined after missing the entire season through an ACL injury. Boubacar Kamara was also ruled out of Euro 2024 due to an ACL problem, while it’s the same story with Netherlands’ Sven Botman.
Ronald Koeman is also without Jurrien Timber, Quilindschy Hartman and Marten de Roon, who injured himself in the Coppa Italia final against Juventus and also missed Atalanta's Europa League final win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Holland suffered a fresh setback mere days before Euro 2024 kicked off with Frenkie de Jong being deemed not fit enough to feature at the tournament due to a persistent ankle problem. Teun Koopmeiners was ruled out just hours later after picking up a muscle injury in the warm-up before the friendly against Iceland.
David Alaba will play no part for Austria after an ACL injury ended his season early.
Poland have been rocked by injuries to two key players, with both Aston Villa right back Matty Cash and Arkadiusz Milik ruled out of the Euros, the latter in the final warm-up game before the tournament.
Kylian Mbappe suffered a real health scare when he broke his nose in France's first game with Austria, but he is expected to feature again come the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
Group E
- Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)
- Olimpiu Morutan (Romania)
Although Thibaut Courtois returned for Real Madrid by the end of the season, he was excluded from Belgium’s Euro 2024 squad by Domenico Tedesco partly due to fitness concerns.
The ex-Chelsea ‘keeper recovered from an ACL injury but Tedesco wanted to ensure his entire squad was 100% fit.
Olimpiu Morutan is a big miss for Romania after he ruptured his achilles.
Group F
- Otavio (Portugal)
- Caglar Soyuncu (Turkey)
- Michal Sadilek (Czech Republic)
Portugal were robbed of midfielder Otavio, who suffered a muscle injury for Saudi side Al-Nassr in the King's Cup final. Turkey defender Caglar Soyuncu has also been ruled out of Euro 2024 due to a hamstring tear.
With less than a week until the tournament, Czech Republic's Michal Sadilek was forced to withdraw from Euro 2024 after injuring his leg in a bike accident.
