Barcelona president Joan Laporta has hailed Ansu Fati as the ‘future’ of the club, after the forward signed a new six-year deal on Thursday.

After a difficult year that has seen Barca have to come to terms with their financial misconduct and the departure of Lionel Messi, the club and their fans have been able to take solace in young players agreeing new deals.

Earlier in the month Pedri was signed up to a new deal that will hope to keep him at the club until 2026. Which has now been followed by Fati agreeing to stay for a year longer than that.

And Laporta has heaped praise on the young Spaniard, by suggesting he could now be who Barca work their future plans around.

“It’s a huge day for Barca because we have signed the present and the future,” said Laporta after the new contract was announced.

“We are very excited. For us, it was very important to regularise this situation. At just 18 years, he has an extraordinary maturity and a super talent.

“Your objectives are our objectives. Thank you to your family and your agent for their efforts because everyone has played their part.

“We have found an agreement and here we are.”

Are things looking up for Barca?

While things may be looking up for Barca off the pitch, the club are still in a pretty precarious situation on it.

Despite overcoming Dynamo Kiev by a single goal, before coming from behind to beat Valencia in La Liga, Ronald Koeman remains an unpopular figure at the Catalan club and his team are anything but convincing.

Indeed, pressure on the Dutch manager will only grow now that two fantastic, young talents have committed themselves to the club and are now seemingly at his disposal.

Barcelona may no longer have Messi, but they now have Pedri and Fati. And that should be more than enough for Koeman to work with.
