Liverpool could be offered a second chance to sign Aurelien Tchouameni after negotiations between Monaco and Real Madrid hit a stumbling block.

Tchouameni has emerged as one of the standout stars in Ligue 1 and had agreed personal terms with the Spanish side but it appears Madrid are reluctant to meet the asking price for the 22-year-old.

The hold-up has allowed Liverpool the opportunity to return for the Frenchman after he initially told them he preferred a move to Madrid, should they be willing to meet the rumoured €80 million asking price.

However, Madrid remain desperate to beat Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain to the punch and are still hopeful of coming to an agreement with Monaco, with the player desperate for a move to Los Blancos.

What does the future hold for Tchouameni?

Despite finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League, Monaco appeared resigned to losing their star midfielder, who has eight caps for his country.

Tchouameni himself has been non-committal about his plans although he hinted towards playing abroad in an interview with CNN.

He said: "I like the Spanish games and the English ones. It’s different playing in Spain or England. But in the end for me it’s just a question of adaptation.

"I am an ambitious person. Every time I do something I just want to win. If I want to be great, I have to adapt in order to gain some things that allow me to grow as a player.”

“It’s funny. With my friends Benoit Badishile and Djibril Sidibe, every morning they say ‘Ah, you’re going to this club.’ And the next day, it’s another club.”

“But it’s good to be in this situation. It means I’m in a good position. I have worked a lot in order to achieve this, so that the best clubs want me.

"In the end, it’s just social media. The most important thing is to do well in the next training session and in the next game. We’ll see.”
