Champions League last-16 form rankings: Real Madrid looking good, Chelsea in crisis

The Champions League will make a return tonight after a lengthy absence.

Now down to the final 16 and in the knockout stages, some of Europe’s elite will compete over the next two weeks for their first-leg, with the hope of getting a huge advantage over their opponent going into the second.

But how have the clubs done since the break in European football?

Some have been shining in their respective leagues and tournaments, while others have been sorely lacking in form - notwithstanding Chelsea, the club that spent a record amount during the January window.

We have compiled a table of the clubs’ form this calendar year so far, including all competitions played in, with ANY win resulting in three points, a draw as a single point, and a loss as no points.

For those clubs who stand on equal points, we put the side with the most wins and then the fewest losses in favour.

Champions League last-16: Form in 2023

Porto top the table after their exceptional form domestically - but they face a tough test by way of an away trip to Inter at the San Siro. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, who remain second place behind Barcelona in La Liga, find themselves high up the form table.

Borussia Dortmund have won all of their seven games in 2023, but their 21 points are still short of the top three of the form table.

Chelsea remain in something of a crisis - Graham Potter has huge task on his hands in getting the side up and running, but with just one win this year, things aren’t looking great. The Blues face Dortmund on Wednesday evening in Germany.

Liverpool may have just found their spark following their 2-0 derby win over Everton. It’s an encouraging display, but next week they host Real Madrid at Anfield, in what will be a repeat of last year’s final.
