Crying Mourinho: I feel like the Special One again
Jose Mourinho says that he feels “special” again after leading Roma to the UEFA Europa Conference League title thanks to a 1-0 win over Feyenoord on Wednesday.
A single goal from Nicolo Zaniolo after 32 minutes was enough to give the Italian side victory in Tirana in the inaugural tournament.
The competition has proven to be a hit – and especially with Mourinho, who suggested that the title ranks up there with anything he achieved at the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United or Chelsea during his illustrious career.
“This title is in the history of AS Roma but also in mine,” he said. “It’s one thing to win with a team that is built to win, it’s another thing to win with teams like Porto, AS Roma and Inter. It makes you feel special…
“I told the players that they had done their job by qualifying for the Europa League by finishing sixth in Serie A. That wasn’t work, it was history to be written. And we wrote it.
“We gave a lot to this competition, without forgetting that the primary objective was to qualify for the Europa League.”
Mourinho: I want to stay with Roma
Going into the match, Mourinho’s future had been in some doubt, but the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea manager says that his intention is to stay in the Italian capital.
“Even if there are certain rumours, I’m here, without any doubt,” he told the media, getting emotional as he did so. “I want to stay in Rome.”
Mourinho’s first season in Rome proved to be something of a roller coaster affair, marked by rumours of dressing room unrest and a squabble with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt, yet it ended with the Portuguese ultimately earning his 27th career trophy.
