Bayern Munich can lay claim to some of the very best central defenders across European football.

Whether it be the versatile expertise of Lucas Hernandez, the remarkable build of Niklas Sule or the youthful promise of Dayot Upamecano, Julian Nagelsmann certainly has a defensive line that is the envy of much of the continent.

However, there’s also another young defender that hasn’t quite made his mark in Munich just yet but has all the potential to be a future Bayern star for years to come.

His name is Tanguy Nianzou and if he can live up to even half the potential he has shown at youth level, he may soon become a household name for fans of the European game.

Like so many talented players in the modern game, Nianzou came through PSG’s youth academy and looked like an exceptionally promising player when he made his debut for the club’s first team in December 2019 during a 3-1 victory over Montpellier in Ligue 1.

Nianzou made five more league appearances for the Parisian side that season, including three French Cup games as well as starting in a Champions League clash against Galatasaray, in which PSG won 5-0.

However, like so many graduates of PSG’s youth academy, Nianzou had his head turned by other clubs promising more game time and in the summer of 2020 the young defender made the move to Bayern Munich.

Since then Nianzou has struggled to pick up the game time he was perhaps promised as Hansi Flick and now Nagelsmann have turned to more experienced central defenders in their quest for silverware.

Bayern is rarely a good platform for young players to pick up game time and that has been evident from the 10 appearances Nianzou has made for the club despite now starting his third season at the club.

At such a young age and after only just joining Bayern in 2020, Nianzou is understandably settled at the club and hasn’t been notably linked with any major clubs of late.

However, the player has struggled for game time at the Bavarian giants and there were some hints that he could be loaned out in January to pick up some valuable game time elsewhere.
