Messi criticised for missing Monaco match: ‘What a fiasco!’
As Paris Saint-Germain take on Monaco in Ligue 1 this Sunday afternoon, Lionel Messi won’t be involved. The club reported on Saturday that the forward has flu-like symptoms and that he’ll miss the league fixture, even though he is still expected to play for Argentina against Venezuela and Ecuador over the international break.
REVEALED: The most valuable players in the world
This absence has further angered a section of the PSG fanbase, with many already unhappy with the star signing after the team’s Champions League elimination against Real Madrid. Messi was one of the several players who was booed by fans at the Parc des Princes in the next match.
What are PSG fans saying about Messi?
Now, supporters of the capital city club are frustrated once again with the veteran player missing Ligue 1 action. As Daniel Riolo, one of the leading football journalists in France, put it: “So Messi isn’t well. Is he in pain? Ah, but we must not criticise him because of what he has done in his career. Because he was fantastic before, he apparently has the right to come to PSG to do nothing. Logic. So logical. What a fiasco.”
Alors il a bobo Messi ? Il est souffrant..? Ah oui on doit pas critiquer car sa carrière tout ça. Comme il a été fantastique avant, il a le droit de venir au PSG pour ne rien faire. Logique. Tellement logique. Quel fiasco.

Riolo wasn’t the only one to express displeasure as there were several angry messages on social media in response to PSG’s statement about Messi’s absence, with many mentioning the fact that the 34-year-old is still set to join up with Argentina this week for their World Cup qualifiers.
Others, though, defended Messi and hit out at Riolo’s line of argument, highlighting the fact that the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t gone away and that any flu-like symptom should be taken seriously. As one user replied: “I'll be the first to say that Messi at PSG is a fraud, but still, with the cases of COVID-19 going up this March, he's still human and anyone can catch the flu.”
