Why Mbappe to Real Madrid transfer is stalling
Kylian Mbappe’s transfer saga is set to drag on further, with Paris Saint-Germain set to offered improved terms, leaving Real Madrid to change their offer.
The French forward was seemingly close to moving to Madrid, but the move is set to drag out over image rights issues, with PSG reportedly offering better terms in that regard.
Image rights are an important factor in a transfer – these affect sponsorship deals and how much players earn from it – and it’s a big deal to a player as marketable as Mbappe.
Why are image rights holding up Mbappe deal?
Image rights are agreements where commercial partners for clubs want to be associated with particular high-profile players and use their images in their promotions.
A player’s image can include a player’s name, nicknames, likeness, image, photograph, signature, autograph, initials, statements and other characteristics.
Through this, a club or brand will be paying a player to endorse a number of specific deals, and someone like Mbappe, who is already quite popular, will be one to bank on by brands when if he joins Real Madrid.
It is believed that Real Madrid have an agreement with Mbappe over a transfer, but a move is stalling over image rights as the club are only offering him 50 percent of his image rights.
This is on top of the reported €180 million in a signing bonus and €40 million in net salary per year, but the image rights situation came as a surprise to Mbappe’s entourage.

On the contrary, PSG are offering Mbappe 100 percent of his image rights and make a similar salary offer, which is believed to be tempting to the player.
In the past, Real Madrid have offered over 50 percent of image rights only to one player: Cristiano Ronaldo, when he played for the club between 2009 and 2018.
Should Real Madrid do the same here, it will be a statement of intent and prove how much Mbappe is worth to Los Blancos.
