Nasser Al-Khelaifi and new Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique have opened up about the Kylian Mbappe situation.

The French megastar has informed his club that he will not trigger his contract extension, meaning that he will be a free agent next summer. This shocking news gave rise to countless rumours about his potential future, but the 24-year-old has insisted that he will stay with the Parisians for another season - likely due to the fact that he is set to earn a fat loyalty bonus if he does so.

PSG, however, have absolutely no intention of losing the man for whom they paid €135 million back in 2018 and who has since pocketed an eye-watering salary for free. The French giants want to recoup part of their investment, but the problem they are facing is the fact that few clubs can afford Mbappe.

The only realistic option appears to be Real Madrid, but Florentino Perez has already stated that he won't attempt to sign Frenchman this year. Now, PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi has broken his silence on an awkward situation that has seemingly reached an impasse.

What did Al-Khelaifi say?

"Our position is very clear," the 49-year-old said. "If Kylian Mbappe wants to stay, we want him to stay. But we can't let one of the best players in the world leave on a free."

New boss Luis Enrique, unveiled shortly after it was announced that Christophe Galtier, who was taken into police custody last week, had been sacked, also spoke about Mbappe, though he was much more reserved.

"When I signed," the former Barcelona boss said, "we always remained open. A lot of things can happen. I will keep it private as it's professional secrecy. I cannot give confidences but we will try to make the best possible squad for PSG."
