Former Inter and Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini has blasted Romelu Lukaku for his “scandalous” behaviour after a chaotic summer in the transfer market.

Lukaku eventually left Chelsea for Roma on loan in the closing days of the summer window.

The 30-year-old had originally been expected to return to Inter for a third time this season, having spent the 2022-23 campaign on loan from Chelsea.

However, the Nerazzurri suddenly stopped negotiations in July after being angered when Lukaku held talks with rivals Juventus behind their back.

As a result, Inter withdrew their transfer offer, leaving Juventus a free path to sign Lukaku.

Juve failed to agree a deal with Chelsea, though, and eventually Lukaku moved on loan to Roma.

Sabatini believes that Lukaku treated Inter badly.

What did Sabatini say about Lukaku?

“All that happened with Lukaku was just unpleasant,” Sabatini told TV Play.

“Directors need to follow ethical principles and players ought to as well. This was a club that showed faith in him, made him happy with Antonio Conte, then protected him when he was playing really badly last season.

“Inter always had a faultless attitude with him. His attempt to run away scandalised me, it’s quite simply a matter of ethics.”

Lukaku originally joined Inter from Man Utd in the summer of 2019 and enjoyed two brilliant seasons under Conte, winning the Scudetto in 2021.

He then angered Inter fans by leaving that summer for Chelsea for a club record fee. After a dismal 2021-22 season at Stamford Bridge, Lukaku forced a loan move back to Inter.

His behaviour this summer after Inter took him back has left a bad taste in the mouth of many Nerazzurri fans.
