Jose Mourinho has described Roma’s start to the season as the “worst ever” in his managerial career, yet the former Real Madrid and Manchester United boss has made a fortune from being sacked in the past and could add to his fortune if the Serie A club elect to jettison him.

Mourinho’s Roma find themselves 16th in the Serie A table through six matches, just two points above the relegation zone, despite only leaders Inter having scored more than their 13 goals.

On Thursday, the capital side slumped to a 4-1 defeat against Genoa, which prompted Mourinho to speak out.

“It's also the worst start of my career, but I think it was also the first time in Roma's history that we played two European finals in a row,” he said in defence of himself.

“You can cry internally because it hurts your heart, also because of my relationship with Roma fans it affects me even more, because it is not a personal issue but also a general one that makes me feel this way.”

Mourinho is under pressure and already he is under threat of the sack.

According to a report in La Stampa, if he were to lose his job at the Stadio Olimpico, he would be due €18 million.

Mourinho’s record-breaking compensation payments

If Roma sack Mourinho, it means that he will have topped over €130m in compensation payouts during his career.

A study in 2021 revealed that the Portuguese already topped the list of managers who had made the most money by being sacked, with the 60-year-old earning €113 (£98m) in compensation after losing jobs at Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

For Roma, a payout of €18m to sack a manager who has been broadly successful over his two years in charge, would represent a serious investment, so Mourinho can be expected to be given the opportunity to fight on for now, starting with a Saturday Serie A encounter against Frosinone.
