Manchester United have been handed a boost in their chase for Cody Gakpo, and could now look to sign him as early as the January transfer window.

The Red Devils were tracking Gakpo’s progress this past summer but didn’t make a move as they were looking to sign Antony from Ajax instead, who was Erik ten Hag’s primary target.

Ten Hag is known to be an admirer of Gakpo having seen first-hand how good he can be while the pair worked in the Eredivisie over the last few years.

Gakpo was named the Eredivisie’s Player of the Season last time around and judging by the way he has started this campaign, he could well do the same for this season too.

Man Utd given Gakpo boost

There is also a huge positive for Manchester United as he has turned down any possible approaches from Leeds United for his services.

Leeds were one of the clubs strongly interested in Gakpo over the summer, and even continued talks after the close of the transfer window with a view to a future move, with the club agreeing personal terms with the player as well.

Gakpo, however, has now rejected Leeds’ advances as he hopes to be at a club where he can compete in European football and challenge for trophies, something the Yorkshire club can’t offer yet.

PSV valued the player at £30 million, and it was something Leeds were ready to pay, but that will now change and given Gakpo’s start to the campaign, the Dutch club will likely demand a greater fee.

Gakpo has been involved in 23 goals so far this season – the same as Erling Haaland – and is likely to be on the plane traveling to Qatar for the World Cup this winter as Louis van Gaal is also a fan of the player.

Manchester United will be one of the clubs tracking his progress, and it’s possible he leaves PSV in January with a host of clubs circling for his signature.
