EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd youngsters Amass and Collyer set to stay for new season

Manchester United youngsters Harry Amass and Toby Collyer will be staying with the club for the new season, FootballTransfers has been told.

Both the players have been in excellent form for the club during pre-season and we understand that there are no plans to send either out on loan, meaning both will be playing in either the Under-21s or the senior squad.

The 17-year-old Amass had started in all three of the Red Devils' pre-season tour games but was cut from the side in the Community Shield defeat against Manchester City on Saturday. Collyer, meanwhile, came off the bench in the second half.

Erik ten Hag spoke about the need for 'seniority' after the game. "I think we had some seniority there," he said. "To start, I think that was the idea. We had a plan how to deal with it and I think also that went how we thought.

"I think all the full backs, although not all were full backs, like Licha, he did good as a full back. Diogo is the full back and Facundo did well as the full back. We are pleased with those performances.

"You need squad depth, you need players who can play in multi-functional positions and when there is an emergency you have to have the option to play players to play in different positions.

But both youngsters will be part of the squad and can play in the forthcoming season should the Dutchman want them.

How good is Harry Amass?

Since joining from Watford last year, Amass has made significant strides. Indeed, he was a breakout player in the club’s otherwise underwhelming pre-season tour of the States.

Amass was snapped up by the Hornets at the age of nine. He represented the England national team at the Under-15 level in 2022, progressing to Under-16 and Under-17 appearances thereafter.

Amass was selected by then-Watford coach Slaven Bilic on the bench for an FA Cup third-round tie against Reading in January 2023, at the age of 15.

He didn’t make the side but the call-up was a testament to his ability at that point. Soon other clubs started to take notice.

FootballTransfers revealed that Man Utd beat the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City to his signature, which was officially announced in August 2023.

Amass was among the best performers in the Under-18s at Man Utd. He was swiftly promoted to the U21s. By this year, Amass, at just 16, was training with the first team.

Amass already believes he can take on minutes at the senior level next season. "My intention is to play first-team football at this club," he has said this summer. "I think if the opportunity comes, I’ve got to take it with both hands, it could change my career. I am just waiting for that moment, I am ready."

"I enjoy it. In front of the crowds, playing with the best players, I’m enjoying it. You’ve just got to show your aggressive side. You might be young, smaller than the opponent, but you have to show you are aggressive and don’t back down. Then you can have a good game."
