Zirkzee is expected to complete his move to United next week from Bologna, with only official confirmation required to rubber-stamp the Dutch striker’s transfer to Old Trafford.

However, there have been reports in recent days that United plan to sign another striker - despite the presence of Rasmus Hojlund and the imminent arrival of Zirkzee.

The Daily Mail reported that United want to sign Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney.

Romano confirms that it is possible United add another number 9 before the end of the window.

What did Romano say?

“If there is an opportunity on the market, they can add one more. But at the moment, it's not something advanced for other strikers,” Romano said.

“The only advanced deal for that position was Joshua Zirkzee. They have all together, decided, after some weeks of internal talks, with all the people involved, that Joshua Zirkzee is the best solution available - talented, with big potential and also for a normal fee, not a crazy fee. This is why Man United decided to go for him.”

According to Give Me Sport, United are challenging Tottenham for Toney’s signature.

Brentford are set to sell the striker this summer as his contract expires in 2025.

Arsenal and Chelsea had been well ahead in the race for Toney for several months, despite interest also from the likes of West Ham and Newcastle.

But FootballTransfers revealed recently that Tottenham had a bid turned down by Brentford for Toney, who has already verbally agreed personal terms with the side.

Our sources reveal that while the England international has accepted a wage offer, Spurs’ £40 million bid was rejected by the West London club.

Brentford are asking for a fee of £65m but it is understood that an offer of £55m would secure the deal.

Toney was one of the hottest properties in the January transfer window, with Arsenal and Chelsea both keen to buy him.

The 28-year-old ended up staying at Brentford, but Brentford manager Thomas Frank has since admitted that it is virtually certain that Toney will be sold at the end of the campaign.

Toney missed the first half of this past campaign due to a betting ban but returned to playing in January after which he scored four goals.
