Man Utd's Sander Berge interest makes no sense - here's why

Manchester United are interested in signing Sander Berge, as revealed by The Transfers Podcast earlier today.

The Burnley midfielder is seen as an alternative for Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte, we understand.

PSG are demanding a fee of €60 million for the Uruguay international, which is €10m more than United are willing to pay at this moment.

So, the Red Devils have been looking at other options and Berge has emerged as a name on their shortlist.

The 26-year-old was excellent for Sheffield United in the Premier League before joining Burnley last summer.

And, he was also impressive for Vincent Kompany's side last season even though they finished second bottom of the table.

With that said, United's interest in him makes no sense whatsoever.

Berge is undoubtedly a Premier League-calibre player and deserves another opportunity in England's top flight.

That opportunity should not be with Man Utd, however, who have aspirations of being more than just a Premier League team.

Indeed, Erik ten Hag's side are supposed to be fighting at the top end of the table, with the likes of Arsenal and Man City.

Neither of those teams would even consider a move for Berge, so, nor should the Red Devils.

They are doing the right thing in looking to offload Scott McTominay, who is wanted by Fulham.

Replacing him with Berge would be the definition of a sideways move, though.
