Chelsea’s decision to spend big to beat Arsenal to sign Mykhailo Mudryk is looking increasingly rash.

The Blues could pay up to €100 million for the Ukraine international winger, who arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk in a high-profile January deal that saw the Blues beat their rivals to the signing.

For a long period, Mudryk looked to be heading to the Emirates Stadium, but instead he wound up at Stamford Bridge, where he has had an unhappy start to life.

Mudryk was, nevertheless, deployed from the outset of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa as he searched for his first goal for the club.

He had a couple of first half opportunities, once showing good anticipation to whisk the ball away from Boubacar Kamara before having his effort blocked by Emi Martinez. His second chance was far greater, though. He was clean through against the Argentina goalkeeper, but with time and space delivered a feeble shot that was easily saved.

There had been excitement about the decision to start him, but that quickly disappeared with such a powderpuff finish.

Mudryk only lasted 10 minutes of the second half, and by the time he departed the field his side trailed 2-0. Fans were not slow to vent their frustration on social media.

And fans of opposing teams – particularly Arsenal – are revelling in Mudryk’s misfortune.
