Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Natalie Portman could be set to go head-to-head, with a potential friendly between Reynolds’ Wrexham’s women’s team and Portman’s Angel City.

Portman – who has appeared in the Star Wars franchise, and other films such as Black Swan and V for Vendetta – co-founded Los Angeles-based Angel City in 2020, with the club entering the top division of American women’s football, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), last season.

Deadpool actor Reynolds bought Wrexham with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney back in 2022; the pair have just celebrated the Welsh club’s return to the EFL after 15 years away.

And, having already arranged a prestigious pre-season fixture with Manchester United in San Diego in July, Reynolds could be about to secure a huge clash for Wrexham’s women’s side.

Portman told ET earlier this week: “I’ve been lucky enough to talk [to Reynolds] about his journey, and he’s so inspirational for what he’s done with Wrexham.

“And they have a women’s team also – so we have talked about kind of having some friendly matches at some point.”

Wrexham make history with title triumph

Wrexham confirmed their place in League Two, the fourth tier of English football, for next season by clinching the National League title last month.

The Red Dragons set a new record for the division by amassing a whopping 111 points from 46 games, finishing four points clear of nearest challengers Notts County.

Speaking after promotion was confirmed, McElhenney said: “I think this is a moment of catharsis for [the fans] and celebration, and for us to be welcomed into their community and to be welcomed into this experience has been the honour of my life.”
