Perr Schuurs has admitted that he isn’t thinking about a move to Liverpool yet as he wants to remain with Ajax in the short-term to win trophies.

The Premier League champions are currently in the middle of a central defensive crisis with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez set to miss the most of the 2020/21 campaign.

However, Jurgen Klopp believes he needs senior cover for his usual starting pair of Van Dijk and Gomez, and had reportedly identified Perr Schuurs as the perfect recruit for January.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, though, it doesn’t look like he’s going anywhere. After the Reds took on Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday, the question was put to Schuurs afterwards about a potential move to Anfield.

“Interest from Liverpool in me? I am not busy with that. I want to win trophies with Ajax first and stay here for a couple of seasons,” he told Dutch outlet SBS6.

21-year-old Schuurs made his debut for Ajax in October of 2018 in an Eredivisie fixture versus AZ.

Even though he is now a highly-coveted young defender, this is still his breakthrough campaign in Amsterdam as last season he was still featuring for Jong Ajax alongside his seven starts in the league. He has started more games in the 2020/21 season already.

With any move for Schuurs now seeming unlikely, Liverpool will have to turn their attentions elsewhere for a new defender.

The two players most heavily linked with Klopp’s outfit over the summer and up until now are Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

Club legend John Barnes recently urged the club hierarchy to go all out to sign Koiulibaly in January.
