Newcastle United have announced that Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent following the 3-2 home defeat against Tottenham at the weekend.

A couple of weeks ago Newcastle were controversially bought over by a Saudi-led consortium, with the club subsequently becoming one of the richest in the world.

Financially at least, the club will now be able to compete with anyone in Europe and as such, they have been linked with a flurry of new players and managers.

Following the takeover, the new ownership stated they would undertake an evaluation of every aspect of the club, including the manager's performance, before deciding on Bruce's future.

At the weekend, Bruce took charge of his 1000th game in management in what was the first match under the Saudi regime.

Unfortunately for him, the occasion was marked with a defeat as Spurs ran out 3-2 winners at St. James' Park.

Bruce reacts to Newcastle departure

Newcastle announced Bruce's departure via a statement on their official website.

Bruce would react to his own exit by praising the fans of the club, saying:

"I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club.

"I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

"This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond."

Several names have already been linked with the Newcastle job, from Brendan Rodgers to Jose Mourinho.

However, one of the front runners is believed to be former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca.
