New Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsman hopes Leon Goretzka stays with the German giants for years to come.

Goretzka has emerged as one of Bayern's key players over the past couple of seasons, with his responsibilities in the middle of the pitch increasing after the departure of Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool in particular.

The German has developed into a powerhouse, too, carving himself an impressive physique during lockdown which has further enhanced his presence in midfield.

Although injuries have hampered his career at the Allianz Arena at points, he has still recorded impressive numbers for a central midfielder.

In 2020/21, he started 26 matches for Bayern and scored eight goals and recorded seven assists.

It is this kind of form which has attracted interest from Manchester United, who are hoping to purchase Goretzka on the cheap due to the fact he is now in the last year of his contract with Bayern.

New Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn claimed this week that the club hope to negotiate a new deal for Goretzka, saying:

"We are in talks with the players. Top players want to be paid accordingly. We are not naive about that."

Nagelsmann, who recently joined from RB Leipzig, was asked about Goretzka's future, and it appears he wants the 26-year-old to stay.

"Leon is an important player for us. I would be happy to work with him for many years," the head coach told reporters in his first official press conference.

"I think very highly of him. He is one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world. Everyone likes to have him in their team."

Nagelsmann defends Sane

One player who has disappointed at Bayern this season is Leroy Sane, who was the club's big-money signing a year ago when he made the switch from Manchester City.

Though his return of six goals and nine assists in 18 starts is by no means poor, injury issues and form issues overall has seen him come in and out of the team.

Nagelsmann wants Sane to focus on his game and hopefully ignore the media negativity.

"It would be good for him if we left him alone in the media. He has outstanding qualities, incredible speed and is one of the best in one-on-one situations. He has a good finish and is also strong in link-up play," the Bayern boss added.
