Sheeran has been one of the biggest names in the music industry since releasing his debut album ‘+’ in 2011.

The 30-year-old is well known for his love of Ipswich Town and has previously been photographed at the club’s matches. Additionally, he is also the shirt sponsor of the club.

Nevertheless, he admitted that he was somewhat sceptical when he heard of the club’s ideal to list him in their squad for the new league campaign.

I just hope this squad number is only ceremonial because I want to see us promoted and that’s not going to happen if I’m playing

“This is bonkers really, isn’t it!” Sheeran told the club’s official website. “When Ipswich told me I thought they were joking but I love the idea.

“I think this is going be a great season and I’m honoured to be a part of it. I just hope this squad number is only ceremonial because I want to see us promoted and that’s not going to happen if I’m playing!”

Why Ed Sheeran has been given the No.17 shirt

Ipswich Town CEO Mark Ashton added: “Having Ed involved is fantastic for the football club.

“We saw pictures of him wearing the 17 shirt when he was at the Club to perform his Euro 2020 TikTok concert so Paul and I spoke about it and we agreed to offer Ed the chance of that squad number.

“It’s our way of thanking him for his support and we look forward to welcoming him to Portman Road this season.”

Sheeran, who will doubtless be turned in as the Tractor Boys begin their league season with a home clash against Morecambe on 7 August, will also be included in the photograph for Ipswich’s official team group.
