Manchester United are still sweating over the future of World Cup winner Paul Pogba, whose contract expires in June of 2022.

Pogba remains the club's most expensive acquisition as he joined the Old Trafford outfit for €105 million back in 2016.

The deal saw the Frenchman return to Man Utd as he was previously in the club's youth system before leaving for Juventus due to a lack of opportunities under Sir Alex Ferguson.

It was meant to be a game-changing piece of business for Man Utd, but unfortunately for the club, and for Pogba, it hasn't worked out that way as he has never been too far from criticism.

Sometimes unplayable, but extremely inconsistent, Pogba has been linked with a transfer away for some time.

Now, Man Utd are facing the prospect of letting the most expensive player in their history leave for free.

Pogba hasn't endeared himself to the fans too much either as his agent Mino Raiola has constantly commented on his client's future, and this time last year even said the player's time was up at Man Utd in the middle of the season.

New hope under Rangnick?

Man Utd had become resigned to losing Pogba on a free transfer in June, but they have been given a boost in their hopes to keep the player, according to new reports.

The Sun has detailed how Pogba would be willing to sign an extended contract with Man Utd if Ralf Rangnick continues as manager.

Following the disappointing tenure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rangnick was brought in as caretaker boss in November of 2021.

The appointment would see Rangnick come in as manager until the end of the 2021/22 season.

Thereafter, he would move upstairs into an advisory role, helping to evolve recruitment procedures and club structure.

There is the possibility that Rangnick could be given the permanent role if he wants it, but the club are looking at the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane and Erik ten Hag currently.

Rangnick has reportedly sold Pogba on the idea of staying at Man Utd by telling the maverick playmaker that it is his intention to create a midfield around him in order to maximise his strengths.

Even though the pair appear to have a good relationship, Pogba actually hasn't played under Rangnick yet as he has been injured since the start of November.
